Youth in Europe

Youth in Europe, also known as Jeunes san Frontières, Jugend ohne Grenzen, Giovani sensa frontiere, and formerly It's a Knockout, was started in East Grinstead in 1976. on the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Charter with Bourg-de-Péage. Six young people aged between 14 and 18 from each of the six towns are invited to participate.

Since then all of our link towns have taken part in this annual event. In 2016 East Grinstead was the host – the theme being environment and conservation. 38 youngsters took part over four days, visiting Wakehurst, the Millenium Seed Bank and the London Science Museum. In 2027 East Grinstead is due to host one again.

Verbania, June 2025

The annual Twinning Youth Event took place this year in Verbania on the splendid Lago Maggiore. EGTTA took six students and two members of staff from Sackville School. Six students from each of the other twin towns: Mindelheim, Schwaz, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Verbania, Tramin (a friendship

town) pus Crikvenica, Croatia (a twin of Verbania) took part in the games. Bourg de Peage sent a delegation, but could not bring a team because of exams at their school. There were two mornings of very competitive games (agility, basketball, boules/bocce, beach volleyball, relay race, sack race and more) which took place on the beach at the lake and in the town square, in the intense heat. Sackville’s super team did us proud but did not manage to win this year. EGTTA Chairman, Nick, did well in the Mayor’s rowing competition!

On the final afternoon the students of each town gave a presentation about their town. This was followed by an ‘ideation’ session, when the students were able to network and give ideas on intercultural exchange activities for the future. The evening ended with a lovely meal, and a party with dancing to a folk group from

Spinazzola and a DJ.

The groups from EG and Sant Feliu were lucky enough to have a boat trip on the lake on Sunday morning to Stresa and back, as our flights were in the evening. The students had a wonderful experience, mixed really well with all nationalities, learning about their cultures, and have made some great new friends. We were looked after very well and made so welcome in Verbania.

Bourg de Peage, June 2024

Staff and students from Sackville School joined the Mayor of East Grinstead, Steve Ody, and a delegation from East Grinstead Town Twinning Association in Bourg de Peage for the annual Youth in Europe event. Students from the six twin towns participated in various sporting events, including shooting, tug of war, indoor rowing and an indoor obstacle course. To the great joy of everyone from East Grinstead, our team triumphed, winning the competition for only the second time in 30 years. After the event the students were treated to a picnic before joining the procession to greet the Olympic flame as it passed through Bourg de Peage on it's way to Paris; a moment to be treasured by all.
